Why Goat's Milk

Why is There Goat’s Milk in Zum Bars?

Why do we use goat’s milk in Zum Bar Soap? The answer is a little more complex than you might think. And no, it’s not because we want to pet goats all day (though, admittedly, this was a factor). In truth, goat's milk, a big-deal ingredient in our Zum Bars, is naturally balanced for the skin, and naturally homogenized. (So if you happen to have a pet goat, you could drink the milk straight from the teat. But that would make you creepy, and it might freak out your goat.)

It could be argued that Zum Bar Soap is the best goat’s milk soap ever. It’s so great that we sometimes call it the G.S.O.A.T. (Greatest Soap of All Time). That’s mostly because it’s handmade with the milk of some pretty badass goats in Kansas City. Now we know what you’re thinking, with all this talk about animals: Is Zum ethical? Absolutely. We love goats a whole lot, so all of our goat’s milk products are cruelty-free, made with milk from well-fed, happy-go-lucky goats.

It’s Got the Balancing Act Down

We prefer goat’s milk because it’s very good and never bah-ha-ha-ha-had. Actually, it’s probably the hands-down best mix going of good-for-you and good-for-nature. Unlike commercial soap, goat's milk soap contains capric, caprylic, and caproic acids; plus naturally occurring triglycerides, otherwise known as good fats. Triglycerides in goat's milk can help keep your skin's oils in balance and won’t dry it out.

Goat's milk has a pH level that's as near to skin as a pair of faux leather pants. That’s the pH level of well-balanced, healthy human hair and skin. Commercial soap contains a bunch of other additives, most of which you’d have to practice pronouncing (but why bother?). Some of these are harsh enough to throw skin’s natural vibe off-center, drying it out to the point where skin feels taut and itchy. That can lead to overly oily skin and clogged pores — yikes, not pretty.

It Ain’t Bad at Nourishing and Calming, Either

Think of goat's milk as food for your skin. Jam-packed with vitamins (an alphabet soup of ‘em, including A, B, C and D), minerals and proteins, goat's milk soap shares the wealth, helping to maintain your skin’s balance of nutrients.

Goat’s milk naturally and gently exfoliates, taking away the dirt and clearing away surface dead skin cells without stripping the moisture you want and need. And it likes to keep the neighborhood free from shady-looking nasties. In fact, goat’s milk is so soothing to your skin, it’ll make you think of mama with a bedtime story. (We love ya, ma.)

Not to go on and on (but we will anyway), Zum Bar Goat's Milk Soap is karmicly created using a cold-processed method, meaning we do not add extra heat in making it. This maintains the integrity of the goat's milk and other ingredients, which by the way, include food-grade olive, coconut, palm, and castor oils, along with essential oils.

In the process of saponification, reactions among all these ingredients produce the soap and glycerin, a natural byproduct your skin will adore. Many big soap companies remove the glycerin and sell it for extra profit, but not us! After all, it's called glycerin, not glycer-out. Glycerin is another devoted fan of your skin, keeping it balanced by acting as a humectant to retain needed moisture. It can help to pull impurities from your pores, leaving skin clean, soft and in love with you.
